Lusus — the complete guide

Everything you need to install, customize and get the most out of Lusus: the fully customizable 3D arcade game that turns WordPress visitors into engaged leads. This manual covers every feature, setting and shortcode.

Version 2.0.9WordPress 5.8+PHP 7.4+License: GPL-2.0+128 settings

01 — Introduction

Lusus is a premium WordPress plugin that embeds a real 3D browser game — a WebGL arcade shooter built on Three.js — into any page or post with a single shortcode. But Lusus is more than a game: it’s an engagement and lead-generation engine. Players leave their name and email to save a score, climb a global leaderboard and can unlock discount coupons — turning idle visitors into contacts, returning players and buyers.

Who it’s for

  • Agencies — deliver a standout feature clients have never seen.
  • E-commerce — reward play with coupons and drive sales.
  • Education, events & portfolios — keep visitors on the page longer and make it memorable.

Key concepts

  • Shortcodes — three independent shortcodes place the game, the leaderboard and the news ticker anywhere.
  • Settings — 128 options control look, texts, audio, game rules and marketing features; a new install starts from the polished Base Style.
  • Style Presets — save a complete look and reuse it on other sites as a JSON file.
  • Leads — every saved score is a contact, stored with the date of consent, that you can export, receive by email or send to your automation tools.

02 — Requirements & Installation

Requirements

RequirementMinimum
WordPress5.8 or higher (tested up to 7.1)
PHP7.4 or higher
BrowserAny modern browser with WebGL — desktop, tablet and phone. On the rare browsers without 3D graphics, the start screen explains what to do.

Installing the plugin

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin and choose the Lusus ZIP file from your purchase (or upload the lusus folder to /wp-content/plugins/).
  2. Activate Lusus in the Plugins menu.
  3. Activate your license (Chapter 3).
  4. Add [lusus] to any page or post to display the game.
  5. Optional: add [lusus_leaderboard] for the public leaderboard and [lusus_ticker] for a standalone news ticker.
Out of the box

On a fresh install Lusus applies the Base Style preset — soundtrack, fonts, colors and logo already set — and switches on the global leaderboard. Updates never overwrite your customizations.

Removing Lusus

Deleting the plugin from the Plugins screen removes all its data: the leaderboard table, the settings and your saved presets (on multisite, on every site). Export the leaderboard to CSV first if you want to keep it.

03 — Activation & Licensing

Lusus is a premium plugin. Licensing, activation and automatic updates are handled by Freemius, the platform that also processes your purchase.

Activating your license

  1. After you activate the plugin, Lusus shows the Freemius activation screen.
  2. Enter the license key from your purchase confirmation email.
  3. Done: updates now appear in your WordPress dashboard.

Plans

  • Annual — updates and support while the subscription is active. If it ends, the plugin keeps working; only new updates and support stop.
  • Lifetime — one payment, updates for as long as Lusus exists.

Every license unlocks 100% of the features and covers one site.

Updates

With an active license, new versions appear in Dashboard → Updates and install with one click, like any WordPress plugin. If you use a page cache, purge it after updating so visitors get the new game files.

04 — Quick Start

The fastest path to a working game:

  1. Create or edit a page.
  2. Insert the shortcode:
[lusus]
  1. Publish and visit the page — the game is live.
  2. Open Lusus → Game Settings to set your colors and logo (Branding and Colors), or pick a ready-made look in Style Presets.
  3. Check Features: game rules, leaderboard, coupon, Game Over banner, email and webhook.
Tip

Want the leaderboard on a separate page, or a scrolling announcement bar? Use [lusus_leaderboard] and [lusus_ticker] — both work without the game (Chapter 7).

05 — How the Game Works

Lusus is an arcade shooter rendered in real time with Three.js/WebGL, up to 60 FPS and sharp on HiDPI screens. The ship flies down a neon track: the player steers, shoots and dodges.

Objective

Destroy asteroids, collect bonuses and survive as long as possible. The HUD shows the lives left; every hit costs one. The game gets faster as the score grows: SPEED 2 at 1,000 points and SPEED 3 at 2,500.

Points

WhatHowPoints
AsteroidShoot it — large ones break in two+10 × combo
Bonus cubeShoot it+50
Triple Laser cubeShoot it: three lasers for 15 seconds+50
Super Bonus (your image)Fly into it — it also reloads the shots. Shooting it costs points+150 / -50
Close callFly very close to an obstacle without touching it+25 × combo
Power-up you don’t needShield already on, shots already full+50

Power-ups

Glowing neon solids, collected by shooting them or flying into them:

  • Shield (tetrahedron) — absorbs the next hit; a shield icon lights up in the HUD.
  • Shots (bars) — reload part of the shots; the bigger the bar, the more shots.
  • Bomb (octahedron, about one a minute) — charges up in front of the ship with a big 3-2-1 countdown, then a shockwave runs down the track and destroys every asteroid and cube in flight, each worth its usual points. Barriers, the Super Bonus and the other power-ups are not affected.

Combo

Asteroids shot one after another build a chain that multiplies their points: ×2 from 5 in a row, ×3 from 12, ×4 from 25. The chain breaks after 3 seconds without destroying anything, or when the ship is hit. The counter and the multiplier appear under the score. Game speed follows the score without the multiplier, so combos never make the game harder.

Obstacles

  • Neon barriers — glowing girders that cannot be destroyed: fly through the gaps. Their shapes get more complex as the score grows.
  • Limited shots — 100 by default, with a counter in the HUD; “NO AMMO” means it’s time to find a reload.

Scenery & effects

Fifteen procedural wireframe themes — gates, ring tunnels, arches, cities, canyons and more — are combined at random, so the track never looks the same twice. Layered explosions with shockwaves, glowing lasers, floating score popups, camera shake and phone vibration make every hit felt. Motion effects respect the visitor’s “reduce motion” setting.

Start and Game Over screens

With Animated Screens on, the world keeps flowing slowly behind the start and Game Over windows, a few asteroids drift by, and the windows flip away in 3D on START and RESTART. At Game Over the player sees the final score, the summary (time, asteroids, accuracy, near misses, best combo), the personal ranking, the form to save the score and, if earned, the coupon.

Anti-cheat

Scores are checked by the server: values above the Maximum Score (default 1,000,000) are refused, saves are rate-limited, and a new score never changes a player’s public name before you approve it (Chapter 15).

06 — Controls, Pause & Full Screen

DeviceMoveFire
KeyboardWASD or arrow keysSpace (hold for a burst)
Mouse (desktop)The ship follows the pointerLeft button (hold for a burst)
Touch (phones, tablets)Virtual joystick (bottom left)Fire button (bottom right)

Pause

Press P or Esc, or the pause button in the HUD. The game also pauses by itself when the browser tab is hidden or the game is scrolled out of view, and resumes with a 3-2-1 countdown.

Full screen

The full-screen button (or F during a game) expands the game to the whole screen; switching in the middle of a game pauses it. On iPhone, where browsers have no full-screen mode, the game fills the browser window instead. You can hide the button in Layout & Effects → Display.

HUD

Score, lives, shots, power-ups, combo and the pause, full-screen and sound buttons sit in small glass windows at the top, in the style of the start and Game Over windows. The sound button mutes music and effects and remembers the choice.

Phones and tablets

The touch controls appear on every touch screen, held upright or sideways; sideways, the Game Over window switches to a compact two-column layout. With Adaptive Resolution on, slower devices lower the rendering resolution to stay smooth.

07 — Shortcodes Reference

ShortcodeWhat it showsIndependent?
[lusus]The full 3D game, with the personal ranking, the form to save the score and the coupon at Game Over.—
[lusus_leaderboard]The public global leaderboard.Yes — works on any page without the game.
[lusus_ticker]A scrolling message bar.Yes — shown even when the ticker checkbox is off.

Game height on desktop

To resize the game area on screens 769 px wide or more, add the desktop_height attribute; phones and tablets keep their own layout. Units: px, vh, vw, %, em, rem (a bare number means px).

[lusus desktop_height="800px"]
One game per page

The game adapts to every screen by itself, so separate desktop and mobile copies are not needed. If a page contains [lusus] twice — for example in two Elementor sections, one hidden on mobile and one on desktop — only the copy visible on screen starts and the others are removed.

Loaded only where needed

Scripts and styles load only on pages that contain a Lusus shortcode — in the content, in Elementor data, Theme Builder templates or popups. Inside the Elementor editor the game shows a lightweight placeholder.

08 — Admin Panel Overview

Everything lives under Lusus in the WordPress admin menu, in four tabs:

09 — Gameplay Settings

The rules of the game are in Features → Gameplay. Everything is on by default; switch off what you don’t want.

Coupon threshold

Combos and the bomb make scores grow faster. If you offer a coupon, play a few games and check that its Minimum Score is still a real challenge.

10 — Visual Customization

Lusus gives you a deep set of visual controls, so the game matches your brand instead of looking like a generic plugin. A color left empty follows the theme colors.

Theme colors

SettingDefaultControls
Primary Color#5535FFMain neon hue: ship, grid, windows
Secondary Color#FF8C00Highlights, asteroids, combo, buttons
Background Color & Opacity#161616 / 100Game background (0–100% opacity)
Text & Laser Color#FFFFFFInterface text and lasers
Subtitle Color#aaaaaaSubtitle on the start screen

Windows, buttons & frame

The start, pause and Game Over windows and the HUD share one style: background color and opacity (default 45), frosted-glass blur (20 px), border color, radius (24) and width (2). Input fields, buttons and their hover states have their own colors and a button radius (12); the outer game frame has its own radius, width and color.

Game scene & leaderboard

Grid color, scenery (wireframe) color, ship shadow and Triple Laser cube color; final score, player names and record row colors; radius and border of the leaderboard boxes and rows.

Neon glow intensity

Neon Glow Intensity (0–200%, default 100) scales every glow and shadow — from subtle to full arcade neon.

Decorative asteroid

The large rotating asteroid behind the start screen follows the mouse with a magnetic effect. Switch it on or off and set its size (100–600 px, default 340) and position.

Display

  • Full Screen Button — shows the full-screen button in the HUD.
  • Adaptive Resolution — on devices that cannot keep the game smooth, the rendering resolution is lowered step by step; fast devices are not affected.
  • Animated Screens — the slowly flowing world, drifting asteroids and 3D window transitions on the start and Game Over screens.

All three are on by default.

11 — Typography & Fonts

Lusus has two font slots — primary (titles and interface; default Orbitron, weight 700) and secondary (text; default Rajdhani, weight 400) — each with three possible sources:

SourceHow it works
Google FontsPick a font from the list; the visitor’s browser loads it from Google.
Theme FontUses the fonts your theme already loads: Astra, GeneratePress, OceanWP, Kadence, Hello Elementor or the Elementor Kit.
Custom UploadA WOFF or WOFF2 file from your Media Library; Lusus writes the @font-face for you. Only administrators can upload font files.

Per-slot fine-tuning

For each slot set the weight, letter spacing and text transform (for example UPPERCASE).

Privacy

With the Google Fonts source the visitor’s browser contacts Google’s servers, which receive the visitor’s IP address. In the EU, mention it in your privacy policy — or choose Theme Font or Custom Upload for both slots.

12 — Branding & Images

Title & subtitle

Game title (default LUSUS) and subtitle, shown on the start screen.

Logos

  • Start Screen Logo (PNG or GIF) — shown on the start screen.
  • Custom Logo — a small logo shown during play. Use a transparent PNG or SVG, about 50 px high.

Super Bonus image

The +150 Super Bonus can be your own image — your logo or product flying down the track. Animated GIFs are supported (decoded frame by frame). Recommended: square, up to 320×320 px, under about 50 KB, 8–20 frames.

White cube instead of your image?

A 3D texture needs permission to be used: take the image from this site’s Media Library. If your media are served by a CDN on another domain, the CDN must send the Access-Control-Allow-Origin header. The browser console shows a Lusus message with the address of the image.

13 — Texts & Audio

Texts

Every word the player sees is a setting in Text & Labels — 33 texts in all (full list in Appendix A). Some examples:

TextDefault
Start / Restart buttonsSTART GAME / RESTART GAME
Instructions title / textFLIGHT CONTROLS / WASD, ARROWS or MOUSE to move – SPACE or CLICK for Laser – P to pause
Score labelPOINTS:

Shield / BombSHIELD ON / BOMB!
Shots reloaded / Out of shots+{n} SHOTS / NO AMMO
Summary labelsTIME / ASTEROIDS / ACCURACY / NEAR MISSES / BEST COMBO
Empty personal rankingNO SCORES YET

In +{n} SHOTS, {n} becomes the number of shots reloaded. The instructions text accepts basic HTML.

Music

Built-in soundtrackMood
Nebula Drifter 3.096 BPM — ambient, exploration
Hyperdrive Engage 3.0138 BPM — fast, dogfight
Stardust Cruiser 3.0115 BPM — dub techno, cruise

The soundtracks are composed live by the browser (Web Audio): no file to download. A Custom MP3 from your Media Library replaces them; Music Volume defaults to 50%.

Sound effects

Procedural effects with a touch of reverb and stereo positioning; the music muffles for a moment when the ship is hit. The sound button in the HUD mutes everything and remembers the choice. Browsers allow sound only after a click or tap, so it starts with START.

14 — Style Presets

Style presets are complete looks you can switch to instantly or reuse on other sites.

Built-in presets

Base Style Flight Style B&W Style Matrix Style Mapping Style Love Style

Base Style is applied on a new install. Built-in presets change only the look — colors, fonts, images and music — and leave your texts, game rules, leaderboard, coupon, banner, email and webhook settings untouched. They cannot be overwritten and are refreshed when Lusus updates.

Your own presets

  1. Configure the game the way you want.
  2. In Style Presets, save the current configuration under a name.
  3. Click the download icon next to a preset to export it as a JSON file.
  4. Import the JSON on another site to reproduce the same look.
Safe by design

Loading or importing a preset can only change Lusus settings — never anything else on your site.

15 — Global Leaderboard

The persistent global leaderboard turns one-time visitors into regulars who come back to defend their rank.

Setup

  • Switch it on in Features → Global Leaderboard (already on in new installs).
  • Set its title (default GLOBAL RANKING) and Players Shown (default 10, range 5–100).
  • Show it anywhere with [lusus_leaderboard].

How players get in

At Game Over the player types a name (up to 8 characters) and an email address, ticks the consent box and saves. Each email is one player: a better score updates the same entry, and the number of games played is counted. The email is never shown in public. The personal ranking on the start and Game Over screens lives in the player’s browser.

Moderation

New players appear in public only after you approve them in Leaderboard Moderation: approve, reject or delete entries one by one or in bulk. The table shows 100 players per page and has a Pending view, so nothing waiting for approval gets lost. When an approved player saves a score under a different name, the leaderboard keeps the approved name until you approve the new one; Reject restores it.

Anti-spam

  • Scores above the Maximum Score (default 1,000,000) are refused.
  • Each network address can save up to 5 scores every 10 seconds; when it only has to wait, the game retries by itself.
  • Up to 30 new players per minute are accepted, so automated floods cannot fill the table or your inbox.
  • When a save is refused, the player sees why.
Events, offices, proxies

Behind a reverse proxy or CDN that hides visitors’ addresses, declare it with the lusus_trusted_proxies filter, otherwise every visitor shares one address. Developers can change the limits with lusus_ip_limit_max, lusus_ip_limit_window, lusus_new_entry_max and lusus_new_entry_window.

16 — Lead Generation

Every saved score comes with a name, an email address and the date and time of the player’s consent. Lusus gives you several ways to use them.

CSV export

In Leaderboard Moderation, download all players — or only the approved ones — as a CSV file (UTF-8, opens correctly in Excel) with the columns Email Address, First Name, Score, Status, Date, Consent Date, ready to import into Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign or Brevo. Values that could run as spreadsheet formulas are neutralized.

Email notification

In Features → Email Notification, receive an email whenever a player saves a new best score. Set the recipient (empty = the site admin email) and the subject, with the placeholders {name}, {email} and {score}:

Lusus: New score from {name}

The email contains the player’s name, email, score and time, with a link to the moderation tab.

Webhook

Send player data in real time to Zapier, Make, n8n or any endpoint. The request never slows the game down (non-blocking, 5-second timeout). JSON payload:

{
  "event": "new_score",
  "name": "MARCO",
  "email": "marco@example.com",
  "score": 1250,
  "timestamp": "2026-10-19T12:30:00+02:00",
  "site_url": "https://example.com"
}

Signup form at Game Over

Show a newsletter form from Contact Form 7, WPForms, MC4WP or similar in the Game Over banner (Chapter 18).

Using the emails for marketing

The default consent text covers the leaderboard only, and the addresses are not verified. To send newsletters, change the consent text so that it asks for that purpose and confirm each address with the double opt-in of your email service — or collect newsletter signups with a dedicated form.

17 — Coupon Rewards

Reward players who reach a target score with a discount code at Game Over — gamified sales that send buyers straight to your shop.

Configuration

In Features → Coupon Reward:

SettingPurposeDefault
Enable Coupon RewardTurns the reward onOff
Minimum Score to UnlockScore needed to win the code0
Coupon CodeThe discount code shown—
Reward Heading / MessageTitle and instructionsYou earned a reward! / Use this code at checkout
CTA Button Text / URLButton to your shopSHOP NOW / —
Expiry InfoOptional urgency line—

Qualifying players see the code with a copy button and your CTA button. Remember to set both the code and the button URL: they are empty by default.

Protected code

The coupon code is not in the page source: the game asks the server for it only after the score qualifies, with a limit per network address. Nobody can read it without playing.

Check the threshold

Combos and the bomb make scores grow faster: test a few games and set a Minimum Score that is still a real challenge.

18 — Game Over Banner

Show your own block on the Game Over screen — the moment of peak attention. Perfect for a promotion, a link, an image or a newsletter signup.

  1. In Features → Game Over Banner, tick Enable Banner.
  2. Write your content in Banner HTML Content: text, links, images and shortcodes.

To show a signup form, paste the shortcode of your form plugin — Contact Form 7, WPForms, MC4WP and similar:

[contact-form-7 id="123"]
Use the shortcode

For security, forms, scripts and iframes pasted as raw HTML are removed. The form plugin’s shortcode works.

19 — News Ticker

A sleek scrolling message bar for announcements, rules or offers. Two messages: the first in the primary color, the second in the secondary color (by default they invite players to sign in and save their score).

  • Enable News Ticker in Features → News Ticker shows the bar above the game.
  • [lusus_ticker] shows it on any page, with or without the game, even when the checkbox is off.

20 — Analytics Dashboard

The Analytics tab gives you an at-a-glance view of engagement, with trends compared with the previous period:

MetricMeaning
Total PlayersAll players in the leaderboard
New TodayToday compared with yesterday
This Week / This MonthCurrent period compared with the previous one
Average ScoreMean score across all players

21 — Privacy & GDPR

Lusus gives you the tools to collect contacts in line with the GDPR:

  • Consent checkbox with your own text (default “I consent to email processing for the leaderboard”) and a link to your privacy policy (Privacy Policy URL). The server checks it again: a save without consent is refused.
  • Consent date — the date and time of consent are stored with each score and included in the CSV export.
  • WordPress privacy tools — Tools → Export Personal Data and Erase Personal Data find a player’s leaderboard data by email address.
  • Policy text — a suggested section for your privacy policy in Settings → Privacy (policy guide).

What is stored

Only for players who save a score: name, email address, score, date of the save, date and time of consent and number of games played. The email is never shown in public. In the player’s browser, the game keeps the personal ranking, the player’s name and the sound choice; Lusus sets no tracking cookies.

Requests to other servers

Three.js and the game engine are bundled with the plugin. The only external request is to Google Fonts, when a font slot uses the Google Fonts source (the default): choose Theme Font or Custom Upload to avoid it (Chapter 11).

Your responsibility

Lusus provides the tools; your privacy policy, the consent text and how you use the data are up to you. For newsletters, see the note in Chapter 16.

22 — Multilingual Sites

  • Admin and built-in messages — English and Italian are included; translate into other languages with the standard WordPress .po/.mo files (Loco Translate, Poedit).
  • Game texts — everything players read is a setting (Text & Labels, title and subtitle, privacy text and link, news ticker, coupon, Game Over banner), so you can write it in any language.
  • Multilingual sites — with WPML (String Translation) or Polylang (Languages → Translations) the game texts can be translated for each language: Lusus ships a wpml-config.xml file that both plugins read.

23 — Performance & Compatibility

  • Loaded only where needed — scripts and styles load only on pages with a Lusus shortcode.
  • Lazy 3D engine — Three.js (bundled locally, no CDN) and the game engine download only when the game scrolls near the screen; a loading screen with a real progress bar covers the wait.
  • Small and fast — engine and stylesheet ship minified (the readable sources are used when SCRIPT_DEBUG is on); one WebGL context; rendering stops while the game is out of view.
  • Adaptive resolution — slower devices lower the rendering resolution to stay smooth.
  • Page builders — Elementor (with a lightweight placeholder in the editor), Divi, the block editor, Theme Builder templates and popups, and any properly coded theme.
  • Cache and optimization plugins — Lusus adds its own exclusions for WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache and Perfmatters (delayed JavaScript, unused CSS). On pages served from a cache it renews its security token by itself, so saves keep working.
  • Hosting — tested on LiteSpeed/Hostinger: HTTP/2 fix, reverse-proxy IP detection, anti-cache headers for its requests.

24 — Troubleshooting & FAQ

The game stays on “Loading…” or looks broken with an optimization plugin

Two optimizations can affect it: Delay JavaScript execution starts scripts only at the first mouse move or tap, and Remove unused CSS strips the styles of elements the game creates later. Lusus excludes itself automatically in WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache and Perfmatters. With other plugins, exclude lusus-loader and zacGameConfig from JavaScript delay, and the folder wp-content/plugins/lusus/css/ from unused CSS removal.

The game doesn’t appear

Check that the page was saved with the shortcode, then purge your cache. After changing settings or updating Lusus, purge the page cache too.

Players’ emails are not being saved

The global leaderboard must be on, and the player must enter a valid email (an invalid one makes the field shake) and tick the consent box. If the server refuses a save, the player sees why.

Several players on the same network get “please wait”

Each address can save 5 scores every 10 seconds, and the game retries by itself. Behind a proxy or CDN, declare it with lusus_trusted_proxies (Chapter 15).

The Super Bonus is a white cube

The image could not be used as a 3D texture — see the note in Chapter 12.

Scores are much higher than before

Combos (up to ×4) and the bomb, new in 2.0.9. Check your coupon’s Minimum Score, or switch them off in Features → Gameplay.

Can I put the game twice on the same page?

No: one [lusus] per page. It adapts to every screen by itself (Chapter 7).
